A week ago, twenty three years after first opening Wulfsyarn, I picked Mann's book up again and started reading. Four or five pages in I recognised the unique protagonist - Wulf, an autoscribe, an AI mind housed in a shell that resembles a foot tall Spartan's helmet floating above the ground I first read this Wulfsyarn book when I was fourteen/5.

Wulfsyarn by Phillip Mann,Avon Books edition, in English Wulfsyarn ( edition) | Open LibraryPages: Notes on the writing of WULFSYARN - A Mosaic This is certainly one of the strangest books I have written.

The book had its origin in a dream. That is not the strange part. Many of my books have begun as waking dreams - I am thinking of Paxwax and to some extent A Land.

Wulfsyarn is the story of the Nightingale, and of Jon Wilberfoss. It is told by Wulf, an autoscribe who has the task of observing Wilberfoss in the aftermath of his return. For the captain of the Nightingale is a condemned man: condemned by the Gentle Order, and self-condemned by a burden of guilt so intense his mind refuses to acknowledge it.4/4(1).

This book is on a par with his earlier book "Master of Paxwax" and is strongly recommended. It was recently serialised on RNZ (Radio New Zealand), this brought Wulfsyarn to my attention.

Although on the boundary between SF and Fantasy,it is a book full of wisdom and insight into human psychology.4/5(8). The Secondhand Bookshops of the Isle of Wight, or, Wot I Did on My Summer Holidays Accordingly, I went a little crazy.

The only other book of yours I’ve managed to get my hands on is Wulfsyarn. It’s also an engaging read, full with original species, races, customs; all serving as a point of comparison for the reader’s assumptions about being.
